Tattoos have been used to show social status and/or a belonging to a particular social group or society.They have also been used for spiritual purposes. The belief that a tattoo of a wild animal for example, would call the spirit of the beast and endow the individual with the power of that animal. Which would explain the popularity of designs based around eagles, wolfs and tigers.But the most obvious reason to have tattoos is to decorate one's person....to show a piece of the individual's 'inside self' on the outside.

All three of these are to make a statement about who you are, where you belong, and where your passions lie.

So it is not a surprise that tattoos of pinup girls are so popular. Especially now that 'pinup' is not just a picture for a guy to pin to his wall, but a thriving sub-culture or 'kustom kulture'.

Popular design motifs for pinup tattoos, whether they depict a real or fantasy woman, can put the pinup girl in any situation imaginable. From just lounging and looking sexy, to fixing a car, riding a motorcycle, taming a wild beast like a tiger, or bearing enormous cartoonish weapons. She may even be a mermaid or a devil.
The only real qualifications for this style is that she be female and curvy in all the right places.They tend to depict a full length figures so are usually done on areas like the arms and torso.

Pinup girls tattoos (as opposed to tattoos of pinup girls) do also include the classic pinup image of the naked or near naked vintage styled model. It is often the rockabilly girl's no.1 heroine Betty Page, but could just as often be a fantasy girl. Similar to the mens designs they also tend to be full length figures so are also common on the arms, but women are more likely to have their tattoo on their upper back rather than their torso.
Other tattoo designs very popular with the ladies are swallows, stars and cherries, which are all common rockabilly motifs. And butterfly, zodiac and fairy art. With modern advances in inks and techniques these feminine tattoo designs can look really stunning.

So we now have a whole generation of new pinups who are not only tattoos, but are tattooed themselves....like that never-ending TV screen of watching yourself, watching yourself on screen!
