Why a whole page for mineral makeup? Well no matter how fantastic your pinup hairstyle, or how perfect your scarlet pout, all can be spoiled by a badly applied foundation.

Every pinup girl needs a flawless complexion, and I have spent the last 17 years of my life, both professionally as beauty therapist and makeup artist, and personally as a glamour puss, trying everything and perfecting the easiest route to perfection.

The foundation type I recommend above all others is mineral makeup powder foundation. When buying mineral powder foundations please avoid the high-street brand names, they are not the real thing and will not give you the result you deserve. To check that your choice is a good one, read the ingredients. If there is any talc in it, especially if the talc is at the top of the ingredients list, its no good. Talc is a filler and will do nothing for your look. The really good mineral powders in my experience, are no more expensive than the brand name ones, they just don't fork out for irritating TV adds!.

Mineral makeup powder comes in a complete range of cosmetics including concealers, colour correctors, foundation, finishing veils, eyeshaddow, blushers and sometimes even more.

You probably already know what colour you like to wear, but remember here that you can mix minerals together to get the perfect shade for your skin. Any good seller of mineral products will be happy to supply you with sample pouches or similar for mixing, as well as advise you on what mixes might be best for your needs.

At school they always told us not to play favorites...give everyone a valentine or none at all...Happily they never said anything about mineral makeup kittens because I am a one brand woman. I love afterglow. Now I'm not saying you have to choose them, but don't come crying to me when the inferior brands don't work for you.To be serious though I have tried allot of brands out there and cannot fault afterglow on any level...website, customer service, advice, product range, eco friendlyness, effectiveness, they score on it all.Afterglow Cosmetics, Inc

For most people all you will really need is a concealer, foundation and probably a finishing veil. Colour correctors are usually either green or yellow and are for balancing colouring issues like redness and dark under eye circles. They work on the principle of the colour wheel, and the fact that any colour will be countered by using the opposite colour on the wheel over it. Dark under eye circles are usually blue/purple in colour, so the opposite colour on the wheel is yellow/orange. Acne, broken capillaries (tiny blood vessels) and hot flushes cause redness. The opposite colour to red is green. It might sound strange but it works. Its the same principle used in hair colouring, and the truth behind the old-wives tale that you should put ketchup on your hair if it turns green. Colour correctors if you need them are applied at the same stage as your concealer, or instead of it.

The reason I like mineral makeup is it is so versatile, good for any skin type and are the easiest way to get to a flawless finish without looking heavy. They are made from gentle, natural ingredients that wont damage your skin. They reflect light which minimizes the appearance of imperfections and wrinkles. They are perfect for acne sufferers as they give great coverage and help to calm inflammation. They blend easily into the skin and actually look better the longer you wear them, unlike liquid foundations that degrade and melt through the day. They are great for dry skin too because they trap a moisture layer and keep your skin hydrated. And they have a natural sun protection factor.

The reason it gives such superior coverage is because they have no cheap fillers in them like talc and oils. So Ill say it again, don't by the rubbish it's a false economy.

Ok case made, here's how to get that flawless look with mineral makeup in just a few minutes.

alt textAll you need tools wise for this is two sizes of kabuki brush and a latex makeup sponge.
A kabuki brush, if you don't know is just a very full and soft brush with a stout handle that serves as a stand. They get their name from the Japanese theatre. Keep the brushes clean by washing them regularly in mild shampoo.

alt textOne tip is that with mineral makeup a very little goes a long way. You can always build it up where you need to but you don't want to end up with a mask.

alt textAnother is that whatever foundation type you use you should let your moisturizer settle for at least 5 minutes before applying your makeup. If you do you will get a more even and long lasting result.

Personally my favorite way to do this is to use a light weight liquid concealer or tinted moisturizer like the illuminator from Stila (Ricky's NYC) iconicon apply with a small brush and blend in with a latex sponge. I put this on either side of my nose, in the middle of my chin and under my eyes. If need to I will then apply mineral powder concealer or colour corrector with the smaller of my kabuki brushes. But you can just use the mineral powder concealer on its own, this is just my preference.

alt textTo apply the powder, swirl your brush in the jar then tap the excess back off. The brush should have a light even dusting on the end.

alt textStart applying the mineral makeup from the centre of your face and moving in a gentle circular motion up and out first, then a little on the chin and jaw. Always work outwards in circular motions until you cant see any lines.
If you need a bit more coverage the simply add another layer until you are happy with it.

Blushers, bronzers and shaders go on at this point if you are using them. If not just skip this section.

alt textBlush goes on the apples of your cheeks
alt textBronzer is in a light dusting all over then a little more on the cheeks and forehead.
alt textShaders are darker shades of the foundation colour and go in the hollows of the cheekbones and on the temples.

Pick one and stick to it, these three do not mix and match.

Mineral makeup finishing powder is not strictly needed, but if you want that flawless porcelain Dita Von Teese look then you will want to use it. Or you can use the signature compact cashmere powder from Besame as a finisher, I like it for touch-ups on the go. Besame at What Katie Did.

Just make sure to dust well with your brush so there is no cakey appearance.

Have fun feeling flawless.
