This tutorial is about how to use lengthening mascara to best effect for when you do not want to wear strip lashes or individual false eyelashes. Perfect for normal everyday wear.
Lengthening mascaras, or 'false eyelashes in a tube' generally have two parts. The first is a white fibre filled liquid and the second a volumising mascara, usually black. For the newer formulations that are all in one, use the same basic method as below, using two light coats and brushing inbetween
You apply the white stuff first and then the black stuff...easy right?...well no actually.
First off I want to say that these products do actually work, it is not a con. However they can be tricky to handle and it is easier than not to make a mess of it.
The pros of these extension mascaras are: *Easier than applying false eyelashes *more portable for on the go touch-ups *Cheaper than falsies *Lower maintenance than false eyelashes *Can (if you really have to) sleep with it on
The cons of false eyelashes in a tube are: *Trickier to apply than regular mascara *Can look clumpy *Hard to find in waterproof *Rare in vegetarian suitable ranges *More likely to flake than regular mascara.
How to apply false eyelashes in a tube:
The white liquid, or extension mascara, contains fibres which stick to themselfs thus enabling them to extend beyond the tip of your natural lash. However they are quite dry and can be really clumpy. You can easily end up sticking your lashes together as much as lengthening them.
So use very little on the wand and stroke the lengths of your lashes gently in an upwards motion. Don't put this stuff on the whole lash, only the ends, and do not wiggle the mascara wand from side to side. If a clump starts to form split it up right away with a lash comb, or better yet a clean mascara wand, before it dries.
Build it up in thin layers until you have the effect you want. When it is dry its time to apply the mascara.
You should apply the mascara as normal, just a little more gently. Start at the root and move with a rolling motion to the tips.
One thing that can happen at this stage is you have on enough mascara but can still see some of the white underneath. This is either because you put on too much white, or the black is drying out. Take a clean mascara wand (spare mascara wands can be bought at salon suppliers)or a lash comb
and roll it through the lashes with an upward rolling motion on the BACK of the lashes. Then re-apply the black mascara.
Now to finish the look curl your eyelashes. This is optional but always looks better.
Curling tips:
Using just a normal metal eyelash curler, grip the base of the lashes. Placement is key here, if you are too close to the root it will hurt and can damage the folicle, but too far away and you just get a daft looking kink.
You want to be close to the root but not quite touching the skin.
Now close the curler and hold firmly for 30 seconds on each eye.
Heated eyelash curlers are not really needed.
You now have the effect of false eyelashes from a tube. Whether is is actually faster than strip lashes is up for debate though!
