Getting your pinup eye makeup looks right.

Eye makeup can be the biggest challenge to get right. But getting your eyes right can take your look from good to amazing. And that is why I felt it was important to have a whole section on the site devoted to just eyes.

Here I first want to simplify eyemakeup and give you the tools you need to get the look you want for your eye shape. Eye colour guides, Brow Shaping, false eyelashes and more advanced eyemakeup tutorials are further on in this section.

Most eye shading uses three shades of shaddow ;
*A light base colour
*A medium tone
*And a dark tone
Choose from the same tonal family and remember its all about blending.

These sets of 3 colours from Afterglow cosmetics are really well chosen and the site has helpful info on which ones to choose for your best eye makeup looks. Click on the picture for more info or to buy. iconicon

The pinup girl eye makeup looks tend to be 'girl next door' for the day and 'screen goddess' in the night. But because you will be wearing red lipstick whatever time of day (you will wont you? if not you may be in the wrong place here!LOL) you need to get the eyes right to avoid looking clownish.

To get the maximum effect from your eye makeup, look at the shape of your eye and eyelids then choose the right shading pattern for you. The advice here can be applied to any of the more advanced eyemakeup guides later in this section.

First thing to do no matter what your eye shape is to prime the area with foundation so the shadow goes on smoother and lasts longer. Ok lets get started...

alt text Eye shape 1: Almond.

almond eyes eye makeup looks This is the easiest shape to work with and will work with most every style you like. The classic way to makeup almond eyes is to apply a pale colour (like cream, champagne, pale pink or white) over the whole of the lid, from your lashes and all the way to your brow if you like, then using a darker shade (like a coffee, plum or grey) in a < shape at the outer corner of the eye, and/or use a rounded brush to darken the 'crease' of your eye like Garbo and Monroe. The < shape should end at the pupil and go no further. This is a nice day look with black mascara and red lip stick. To transform to an evening look all you need add is eyeliner and/or a darker shade of shadow in the outer corner of the eye, well blended in.

alt text Eye shape 2: Round.

round eyes eye makeup looks Round eyes can be done the same way as almond eyes. Or alternatively if you wish to lift the look of the eyes apply the darker shadow on the outer third of the lower eye area, with an upwards sweep towards the temple. This creates an optical illusion of stretching and lifting the eye

alt text Eye shape 3: Deep-set.

deep set eyes eye makeup looks With deep-set eyes your goal is to bring your eyelids out.Apply your light shade in the same way as for almond and round eyes.
For your darker shade apply along the lash line from the centre of the eye out to the edge, but not in the crease at all.
This will make the lashes look darker and more prominent, taking the focus to the eye rather than the lid.

alt text Eye shape 4: Hooded eyes.
If your upper lids droop down try this shading method (this also looks great on Asian eyes too)Apply the light base shade to the lower eye area and to the brow bone for definition. With your mid-tone shade use a contour brush to shade the whole crease in an arc . If your aim is to make your eyes look bigger then do not apply any liner because that will make the lash line recede, but do apply mascara to both top and bottom lashes.Get this right and when you look in the mirror you should notice your 'hooded' lids look less obvious.

alt text Eye Shape 5: Droopy eyes.

droopy eyes eye makeup looks If your eye droops at the outer edge then use the same method as for hooded eyes but line the lower lash area with a fine brush in dark shadow or a soft pencil. Bring the line just past the edge of the eye with an upwards sweep but do not line the upper lashes.

Eye shading tip:
A great tip for eye shading, if you find it hard, is to angle your mirror to about 45 degrees below your eye level and tilt your head back. This has the effect of making the crease dissapear so you can see the entire lid
